Power and control
Domestic violence is about "power and control" of the abusive partner. Power and control is used to hold onto the survivor Examples: isolation, emotional abuse, economic abuse, sexual abuse using the children, threats, using male privilege, intimidation. When undetected or ignored, violence often increases in frequency and severity. survivors often experience more than one form of abuse simultaneously.
The Cycle of Violence:
Typically in domestic violence can recognize a cycle of violence that contains three phases: tension building, explosive and honeymoon.
Phase 1: Tension Building The survivor feels like she/he is walking on eggshells. The abuser often becomes extremely jealous, possessive, uses a lot of emotional and verbal abuse, isolation, blames survivor for everything, accusations of promiscuity, he/she becomes very controlling, uses threats, and stalking behavior.
Phase 2: Explosive the most violent incidents occur: physical, sexual, extreme verbal violence, more severe than in tension phase
Phase 3: Honeymoon promises it will never happen again, makes excuses for behavior, buys flowers, candy, promises to change, becomes the person she/he feel in love with.
