Sexual Assault Statistics
  • 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually assaulted by age 18 (Finkelhor, et al., 1990)
  • 28.3% (estimated) of rape/sexual assault victimizations are reported to law enforcement officials (Rennison, 200)
  • Probability that an arrest will be made when the crime is reported: 1:2. (National Center for Policy Analysis, 1999)
  • 16.3% of those arrested are sentenced to prison with an average sentence of 128 days.
  • 7 in 10 rape and sexual assault survivors know their attacker prior to the assault. (Rennison, 2000)
  • Chances that a woman will develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after being raped are between 50% and 95%
Male Sexual Assault
  • Believed that 1 in 6 men will be sexually assaulted in his lifetime.
  • 9% of all rape survivors are men **underreported.
  • False assumptions and popular stereotypes, promote the belief that men are immune from sexual assault.
  • Sexual identity may become an issue for males survivors that have been sexually assault by another male.
  • survivors may question their heterosexuality because of the way their body responded to stimulus during the assault.
Dating Violence Statistics
  • Dating violence also occurs in same-sex relationships.
  • 89% of teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 say they have been in dating relationships
  • 40% of teenage girls ages 14 to 17 report knowing someone their age who has been hit or beaten by a boyfriend (Children Now/Kaiser Permanente poll, December 1995)
  • Nearly 80% of girls who have been physically abused in their intimate relationships continue to date their abuser
  • 30% of the women between the ages 15-19 murdered each year are killed by their husband or boyfriend (City of New York, Teen Relationship abuse Fact Sheet, March 1998)
  • One in every three teen dating relationships is violent.
  • The highest rate of violent dating relationships 16-24 year old age range.
  • Dating violence leads to marital violence.
  • Over 90% of the injuries in dating violence occur to the female in the relationship.
